Individual Sport Psychology Services

Consultation and one-on-one sessions focused on you and your goals

CBD

Individual services are a chance for you to focus on your goals through individual sessions or longer term consultations. Whether you are struggling with mental part of your game, facing a challenging situation in your athletics career, or looking to use sport psychology to improve your performance, individual services can provide you with guidance, support and growth. Individual services are…

What are individual services?

Focused on you

Working one on one means we can be fully focused on your goals and allows us to build a relationship that promotes your growth as both an athlete and a person.

In-person, online, or over the phone

For people who are close by, sessions can take place at my office in Delmar, NY. I also work with a number of athletes across the country who access my services through phone or confidential videoconferencing software.

Session by session, or season-long consultations

Schedule session-by-session if you’re just interested in giving sport psychology a try or you feel that a few sessions may be enough. Season-long consultation packages are an option for greater flexibility and more between-session communication.

Why Individual Sport Psychology Services?

Enhance your Performance

Integrating sport psychology can help you improve your confidence, focus, resilience, and consistency. Individual services will introduce key ideas from sport psychology so that you can approach practices and performances in ways that will allow you to get the most out of yourself on a more regular basis.

Grow as a Person and a Performer

Knowing yourself and your strengths well is key to having successful and meaningful experiences in sport. Individual services allow you to explore your personal patterns and understand your best qualities so you can accomplish your goals in sport and grow as a person off of the field.

Navigate the Challenges of Sport

The world of sport comes with many stressors and complicated situations. Maybe you are recovering from injury, making a decision about the direction of your career, or trying to support an athlete in your life. Individual sessions can give you a space to sort through your situation and get guidance about how to move forward.

Foster Joy and Well-Being

When people first fall in love with sport, it is usually because of the joyful and meaningful experiences it allows us to share with others. Too often that joy gets overshadowed by a focus on outcomes and performance. Sport psychology gives you the tools to understand your participation in the broader context of your life and well-being so you can find a balance and approach that is healthy for you.

  • Individual services can be helpful for anyone with an interest in improving the mental aspects of their performance or learning more about sport psychology. A lot of the people I work with have goals that fall into one of two categories:

    Performance

Many of the athletes who I work with first got in touch with me because they wanted to use sport psychology to improve their performance by developing confidence, consistency, focus, and resilience. Sometimes people seek out my services because of a particular mental block – issues with performance anxiety or difficulties with focus/motivation. But, you don’t need to be facing a challenge in order to benefit from integrating sport psychology into your approach to your sport.

    Support

I also frequently work with athletes who are seeking support as they navigate challenges in their athletic life. For example, I have worked with athletes recovering from injury, making important career decisions, and contemplating retirement from sport.

Sport psychology isn’t just for athletes. The tools that help athletes perform have also been shown to be helpful for enhancing performance in other settings such as music, medicine, business, and first responders. Sport psychology can also be helpful for people who have roles supporting athletes; for example, coaches or parents who want to be mindful of their experiences with sport while also fostering development/growth in their athletes or children.

  • Our sessions are conversations, typically around 50-minutes in length that take place in my office, through video chat, or over the phone. Early meetings will typically focus on gathering information, getting to know each other, establishing goals, and making a plan to help you reach your goals.

In sessions I’ll ask you questions meant to help you reflect on your sport experiences, increase your self-awareness, and explore your goals. I will also share information about key ideas from sport psychology and help you develop skills and approaches for using these ideas to reach your goals. Typically, I will give you something to work on between sessions so that you continue to reflect on our conversations and have concrete ways of implementing our work into your game.

  • Session-by-session

Session-by-session means that we will schedule sessions one at a time. This approach is typically best for people with specific or shorter-term goals, or also for people who are new to sport psychology/working with me. It involves 50-minute sessions that will usually be weekly or bi-weekly, though sometimes longer gaps between sessions are also appropriate depending on where we are in our work. With this approach to scheduling, we’ll work together to decide the number and frequency of sessions you need to reach your goal.

    Season-long consultations

With season-long consultations involve working together for an extended period of time (usually across the course of a season). Consultation packages include regularly scheduled meetings along with between-session communication (i.e. text message consultation) and opportunities for short notice scheduling. Season-long consultations are typically best for people who have worked with me before and are interested in using me for consistent, regular check-ins where we can focus on fully integrating sport psychology into their game.

If you aren’t sure what’s right for you, please contact me! I would be happy to speak with you more about what approach will be the best fit for your goals and resources.

  • For athletes seeking mental health support, it can often be beneficial to work with a therapist who has a strong understanding of how the demands and challenges of sport affect your overall mental health. My experience working with teams and athletes at all levels of competition has allowed me to gain a good understanding of the pressures of everything from youth/recreational, to high school, to professional and elite level sport.

I am a licensed psychologist trained in counseling psychology and have significant experience providing mental health and counseling support. I am licensed in New York State, and am therefore only able to provide psychotherapy for people who are in the state of New York.
