Counseling

I am trained in Counseling Psychology

Counseling Psychologists are focused on understanding people and their well-being in the context of their life and development. For my work with clients, this means you can expect to be treated as a person - not a disorder - and that we will work to understand how your concerns and goals fit into the bigger picture of your life, relationships, and culture.

I have experience with a wide range of concerns

Before starting my private practice, I provided therapy in a community-based behavioral health clinic and in college counseling centers. In these settings, I encountered a wide range of presenting issues including adjustments and life transitions; anxiety, depression, and trauma; and more severe forms of psychological distress. Although there may be times where I refer someone to a more specialized provider, it is generally very likely that I have knowledge and experience with the concern that is bringing you to counseling.

I strive to be warm, collaborative, and transparent

My goal is for you to feel supported and listened to so that you are comfortable opening up about your experiences. You should also feel like we are working together — this means feeling that your goals and experiences are at the center of our work, seeing I am invested in your progress, and having a clear understanding of how the approaches we are using will help you achieve your goals.

Sport Psychology

I was trained by leaders in the field

During my graduate training at Springfield College and as an intern at West Point’s Center for Enhanced Performance I had the opportunity to learn from world renowned experts and pioneers in the field of sport psychology. You can trust that I am up to date on current research and prepared with a strong foundation of knowledge that will help you achieve your goals.

I have experience with many sports and competitive levels

Over the past ten years, I have provided sport psychology services for teams and athletes across a wide range of sports and competitive levels – including recreational sport, youth sport, Division 1 college, professional, and Olympic level athletes. No matter what your goals are, I will be invested in helping you achieve them and I will have some context for understanding the demands and challenges of your competitive level.

Approach focuses on strengths as a person and performer

Athletes are at their best when their performance reflects both their strengths as an athlete and their strengths as a person. In our work together, I strive to help you improve your mental game by pushing you to develop a deeper understanding of yourself. It is my hope that this growth can be useful to you in sport and in life.

My Story

I didn’t realize at the time…

…how much a sport psychologist would have helped me. I was a high schooler and the thing I cared about most was the three sports that I played. From the outside I was seen as a good student and a strong athlete, but inside it was a different story. I was easily frustrated, highly self-critical, and I had no idea what my best qualities were or how I could use them to be successful. Right around the time that I was graduating from high school (and ending my athletic career) I learned about sport psychology and knew it was something I wanted to pursue.

As I learned more, I was surprised…

…to find myself majoring in philosophy and becoming passionate about psychotherapy and mental health. Both subjects resonated with me because of their depth. Life is complicated, people are complicated, and quick fixes and shallow interactions are rarely nourishing. It frustrates me when mental health and sport psychology are reduced to a set of tips and tricks. People deserve to be seen — and to see themselves — in all of their complexity.

I know now that…

…I am a deep thinker who loves to learn and cares a lot about people. I strive to have these qualities reflect in my work. I really enjoy getting to know my clients and learning with them as they reflect on themselves and on their lives. I have a passion for watching people succeed. My favorite part of the work I do is witnessing the transformation that occurs as people begin to connect with themselves and trust in their own best qualities.

Today…

…I have almost ten years of experience providing psychotherapy for adult clients and over ten years of experience providing sport psychology services for athletes and teams. I am very proud to be establishing my practice in Delmar, NY where I was born, raised, and where I currently live with my wife and son. It is my hope that I can bring my knowledge and experience to my community, and be a resource for mental health and sport psychology.
